COURSE SYLLABUS

INTRO SESSION ONE

What is Yoga, Yoga's History & Course Logistics + What does it mean to be a student? What is a practice? How do we practice?

The course begins with a lecture on the history of yoga's concepts and practice techniques. We will discuss the key concepts of yoga, how they have shifted over time, and consider the factors that have caused us to arrive at this juncture in the history and development of yoga.

We will look at what it really means to be a yoga student and explore the skills w need to become (or continue to be) a wise student who actively participates in the educational processes embedded within yoga.

We’ll discuss the intentions of a yoga practice within a historical and modern context, learn how the current framework actively impedes that, and situate ourselves as individual practitioners and teachers. We’ll consider the various practice techniques that we might employ to move us toward yoga’s deeper aims.

We’ll outline the logistics of the course and talk about to how to get the best out of YST by clarifying what you need and how best to engage.

INTRO SESSION TWO

The Yoga Sūtras Outlined

The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali has become the classical yoga text most commonly utilized in Western yoga teacher trainings. We will start by investigating the historical use of the text as well as the intentions behind its teachings, followed by an engaging and interactive philosophy lecture and group discussion.

Based on the understanding we gain, we will spend the afternoon breaking down current class structures, such as sequencing and cueing, to look for opportunities to stay connected to the Sūtras’ philosophy within the context of physical practice and to share that understanding with your students. You will be offered activities and interactive classroom techniques to actively engage with the fundamental and concepts yourself, as well as tools that help you to learn how to develop techniques and educational tools of your own for your classes and students if you teach.

INTRO SESSION THREE

The Bhagavad Gītā Outlined

Although older and potentially of more practical help to modern yoga practitioners than the Yoga Sūtras, the Bhagavad Gita is less often encountered. We will begin by historically contextualizing the use of and the intentions behind the teachings in this rich and beautiful text, followed by a philosophy lecture and group discussion about its concepts.

Based on the understanding we gain, we will spend the afternoon breaking down current class structures, such as sequencing and cueing, to look for opportunities to stay connected to the Gita’s philosophical themes within the context of physical practice and to share that understanding with your students. You will be offered activities and interactive classroom techniques to actively engage with the key concepts yourself, as well as tools that help you to learn how to develop techniques and educational tools of your own for your classes and students if you teach.

INTRO SESSION FOUR

Turning Philosophy Into Action
You'll learn grounding and nervous system regulation techniques so the philosophy we're studying doesn't stay stuck in your head. We'll look at the concepts in the texts through a modern neuroscience lens that will explain why we're practicing the way we are during the course's practice sessions, and give you methods to take the lecture content out of your head and into your body. This is how you live yoga instead of just talking about it. Because knowing the Gītā and Sūtras intellectually and actually applying them when you're frozen, spinning, or ruminating are two completely different things. This session bridges that gap so you can move from SEEING your patterns to actually CHANGING them on a bodily level.

PHILOSOPHY LECTURE - ONGOING MONTHLY

Lecture on Philosophy

Each month will begin with a lecture on a portion of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali and the Bhagavad Gītā. We will discuss roughly 15-30 sutras each month and two chapters of the Gītā. By the end the course we will have made it through the entirety of both texts including and additional overview of the entirety of each text the last two months of the course. In essence you will have covered the entirety of each set of teachings three times over giving you a very deep and thorough exploration and understanding of these texts not just in theory but in practice and practical life application.

The month philosophy lectures are not just an academic look at the texts but contain a thorough explorations of the concepts the teachings told through story, metaphor, and relatable real life situational examples which allow you to explore the teachings in a very personal way throughout your day to day life.

No longer will you feel like these teachings are not relatable nor that they're far to confusing to be applicable. You will have a real and tangible relationship with the material that will aid you in. your growth as a student of yoga and will also have a direct impact on how you teach if you're also a teacher of yoga.

DISCUSSION ROUNDTABLE - ONGOING MONTHLY

Community Discussion and Q&A

One of the most vital and productive parts of this course is the group discussions. Whether you attend live or watch the recordings, coming together to discuss the month's readings, practices, and lecture sessions truly brings this course and yoga's teachings to life.

The discussion sessions is one of the most amazing part of the course. The community formed is so beautiful and unlike any other course out there.

Time and space will be made for contributions from all who wish to participate, but there is no obligation to actively contribute to the discussions. Everyone has their own learning style, and for some, this may be a time to simply reflect and listen.
